blog entry for 8/4/2024

current mood: apathetic?

current music: concrete blonde, bloodletting (the vampire song) + the backseat lovers, growing/dying

entry: i don't know if i'll update this blog a lot- i've never been good at keeping diaries- but i figure i might as well try.

i've been trying to beat my record of 'most movies watched in one day' (five) but i woke up too late today. i watched two movies anyway, the haunting (1999) and the innocents (1961). the haunting is an adaptation of Shirley Jackson's 'the haunting of hill house' which was a book i REALLY REALLY loved, so any adaptation is already going to have a hard time with me. there was a canonically bisexual character, which totally caught me off guard. so. that was awesome. other than that, that movie sucked so bad.

the problem with adaptations when youre already familiar with the source material is that you're not only judging it on being good art, you're also SPECIFICALLY judging it against another piece of art. and in this case, it did NOT measure up. this movie felt at times like scooby doo. so that was a disappointment. at least theres like twelve other adaptations of the haunting of hill house!

the innocents was also an adaptation. in this case, a short story ('the turning of the screw') but i have NOT read the original. so maybe thats why i liked this one way more, but also i just think this one was better in general. i don't watch a lot of older movies, so the black-and-white took some getting used to.

(id text: a screenshot from 'the innocents' where our protaginist 'miss giddens' stands in the left side of the screen holding a candlabra. she looks startled or perhaps afraid. the rest of the room is in shadow besides the parts illuminated by the few windows in the back. end id text.)

anyway, deborah kerr was so beautiful in the main role i wanted to draw her, and i started, but got distracted. i might finish and post it here if i ever get my art section up and running. :/

dear reader, as i was writing this, i stretched my arm so bad i think i sprained something. i've been real tense lately- i say that like im not always tense. my mom offers to buy me massages sometimes because she swears by them, but i would not be comfortable with that on any level, which sucks. im sure theyre great for those who want them.

i kind of want to watch another movie tomorrow, or try and break my record, but i also know that i need to get out and about or i'll go crazy. might go to a dvd store or the library. that way i'm still working on my movie goals, but also getting OUT. i would go to a thrift store, but im kind of broke at the moment. it sucks that to go out you kind of have to have money. and have a really functional phone. went to the hospital a while ago and the parking required scanning a QR code. i swear to god i almost turned into an active volcano.

anyway. until next time!

(btw, you can find 'the innocents' fully on youtube.)
